Measure theory and integration are presented to undergraduates from the perspective of probability theory. The first chapter shows why measure theory is needed for the formulation of problems in probability, and explains why one would have been forced to invent Lebesgue theory (had it not already existed) to contend with the paradoxes of large numbers.

In these notes we explain the measure theoretic foundations of modern probability. The notes are used during a course that had as one of its principal aims a swift introduction to measure theory as far as it is needed in modern probability, e.g. to de ne concepts as conditional expectation and to prove limit theorems for martingales.

  107. I’d like to have a correct general understanding of the importance of measure theory in probability theory. For now, it seems like mathematicians work with the notion of probability measure and prove theorems, because it automacially makes the theorem true, no matter if we work with discrete and continuous probability distribution.
